Writing and Disabilities Event
An evening of learning and discussion, featuring three critically acclaimed writers with disabilities
Hi folks,
I’d like to invite you to join me for an evening focused on writing and representing people with disabilities in fiction and non-fiction works. The event takes place on Thursday, May 25th at 8 pm EST on Zoom.
The Event
Three unique writers with disabilities will share insights on how to better represent people with disabilities in creative works and discuss their experiences of being creative writers living with disabilities.
Featuring authors Rue Sparks, Sabrina Scott, and Phunockery
The speakers will break down harmful tropes perpetuated in popular media, discuss how their own disabilities impact their creative work, suggest ways of better fictional representations for people with physical and mental disabilities, and offer insights on how to create authentic characters with disabilities.
The Panelists:
Rue Sparks
Author Rue Sparks is a composite of neurosis and nonsense held together by duct tape and sheer stubbornness. A widow, disabled, and queer, they traverse the equally harsh and cathartic landscape where trauma and healing align to create stories that burrow into the hearts and minds of their readers. In addition to short story collection The Stars Will Guide Us Back, Sparks has authored the novelette Daylight Chasers, and the magical realism/mystery novel The Fable of Wren. They create artwork for the indie publisher, Lost Boys Press. They live in Noblesville, Indiana, in the USA with their sweet senior support dog and cantankerous cat.
Sabrina Scott
Author, artist, and public speaker Sabrina Scott is a globally recognized professional witch and spiritual teacher with more than 20 years of experience, 200+ students, and clientele worldwide. She has been profiled in print and on video by Vice, Broadly, Refinery29, Yahoo, Witches Magazine, Sabat Magazine, Clin d’oeil Magazine, Ghosts Magazine, and more. She is an artist, writer, and speaker. Sabrina is known for her sassy, iconoclastic, no bullshit style on topics as diverse as witchcraft, magic, tarot, divination, energy work, animism, mediumship, environmental spirituality, manifestation, affirmations, and the power of feminine energy. She offers bespoke mentorship services in creativity, spirituality, magic, tarot, business, and personal transformation. Her purpose is to inspire others to claim their magic and radically transform their lives, and she leads by example. She is the creator of graphic novel Witchbody, which was nominated for the biggest comics award series in Canada. Witchbody has received praise from environmental philosopher Timothy Morton, comics journalist Joe Sacco, tarot gurus Rachel Pollack and Michelle Tea, and acclaimed witch Judika Illes. Curse and Cure: Magic for Real Life, a spiritual how-to, is Sabrina’s second book.
Phunockery
Phunockery is a Dissociative Identity Disorder system—an amalgamation of multiple Identities. They have written nine novels and uncounted short stories that very few eyes have seen. While on a hiatus from writing, they developed a quickly growing and dedicated cult community on TikTok around mental health education and advocacy. They regularly go live and post videos to demystify and debunk harmful rhetoric around their disorders. They live in Kalamazoo, Michigan with their two dogs and a goddess trapped in a cat’s body.
Hosts
The evening is hosted on Zoom by The Writers' Support Group and moderated by fiction authors Lainey Cameron and Charlotte Dune.
