I use AI a lot as a brainstorming partner. I ask questions (mostly to ChatGPT, occasionally to Claude) about my plot, my characters, and my dialogue. I always include as much as I can about the situation (ie. the plot point, the emotional tone I am trying to hit, the Enneagram number of the character of a bit of their background) in my prompt. And if I don't think my answer is good enough, I re-direct or add to my original prompt. I, like Joanna Penn, am AI positive. Might as well be, because AI isn't going away.

Same! I love Joanna Penn’s AI content. I use AI for assistant type tasks frequently also. I like Claude Projects where you can upload your entire novel and have it answer questions or write marketing copy based on the novel. I used this to create a series Bible for my novels, with character sheets so I can keep track of pertinent details for consistency.

Good point about knowing how to prompt the LLM. I use Stable Diffusion on my PC rather than an online service, and the possibilities really are endless. With the right LoRAs it's capable of generating beautiful and exact images.

My greatest wish though would be to download a book instantly into my brain. I've got a massive backlog and I know that once I've read them, I'll be much wiser. But I just don't have time.

Yes! I’d love to download foreign languages directly into my brain as well. German, Japanese, Hebrew, Farsi, etc.

And I haven’t used Stable Diffusion. Cool that it’s so capable. I’ll have to give it a try sometime.

And for anyone reading this, and unaware of what LoRAs, it’s like custom weights to fine tweak ai models, kind of like LUTS or style sheets that further refine the LLM. Right? Or how would you describe them!

yes perfect description. And I’d love to download languages. I speak Spanish, Catalan and some French, and am learning Portuguese, but it’s been a slog! I wish I could just download them.

“LLMs and “AI” are modeled on children’s brains. They are created like children’s brains from a “neural network” where input goes in, is learned, and then output based on that input is externalized and performed, then rewarded or punished, just like how kids are trained, and like a child’s brain, they will one day grow up and make art”

Such a killer line! 🤘🏽

I’m so out of the loop, I didn’t know chatgpt could make pictures! My spouse has it, I will have to get a tutorial and try it out for myself

So ChatGPt4o can make pictures, as can Grok2 on X. Neither are as great as MidJourney in the hands of someone who knows what they're doing, but I don't really know how to use MidJourney and don't pay for it. I only use it for my own ideation, like prototyping images or translating my ideas into images, vs using for any final products.

I tried midjourney for free and was unnerved by all the people looking like soulless demons. Hopefully the paid one is better!

I don't use AI for my writing-related stuff. But it has a lot of useful applications in science.

Cool, yes exciting for science! I don’t ever have it write for me, but I’ll ask it random questions.

I use AI in my classroom to create visual content for students. I also use it to make grocery lists that meet budgetary and nutritional requirements. I think this is where we need to go: use the tech to enhance our tasks, not replace them.

Same. Though I think one day the AI will be able to operate on its own and may use us to do things for it. Maybe one day your boss will be an AI. Not that I’m craving this future, but it’s possible.
