Charlotte you aren’t factoring in agriculture… how will we feed people as extreme weather events and heat skyrockets? Deluges across the UK and Northern Europe may reduce yields by half. The Colorado River is dying and it feeds all farming in California etc. I feel like few are focusing on this and it is coming quickly.

You’re right! I was imaging a much more sudden scenario where there wouldn’t even be time to consider such things.

The food situation is scary already as is. I constantly feel worried that I’m eating plastic, or just lacking nutrients and I feel guilty about the meat I heat.

It’s very hard to balance human desires with ethics, health, kindness, and sustainability at present.

Interesting topic. One thing I’ve noticed is the extreme weather recently in the mid west. My mom’s family is in western Ky, where it is kind of flat, but forested and rolling hills. I had never heard of tornadoes striking there until my aunt lost her house two Decembers ago. Now, tornadoes are like a monthly thing!

We’ve moved to Montana and sometimes I wonder if climate change isn’t part of the attraction- there are many enclaves of the Uber wealthy (Yellowstone Club and more) that have second third fourth homes here. Maybe to have a cool climate escape in the future? It’s snowing today, but the overall snowpack is not great and so it will be hot and forest fires this summer.

Non-fiction reads- check out Jeff Goodell- his first was, “The water will come” followed by, “But the Heat will kill you first”

For some real life horror, check out https://www.npr.org/2021/10/21/1041997332/northern-california-family-hiking-died-heat-exposure

For some post apocalyptic reading, Z for Zachariah made an impression back in 8th grade. I also like Station 11, the book.

I, for one, cannot take the heat. I loved living in the Bay with its lovely 60 degree days and fog!

Yes! The bay really has the best weather of anywhere. Recently learned that tornadoes are way up all over US and basically only happen here which is crazy.

And totally agree on the climate attraction element for the snow bird types. Def think it’s going to become more and more of a thing for anyone who can afford it to have two homes in different climates.

And thanks for the reading recommendations!

I like Hummingbird Salamander by Jeff Vandermeer, but too doomsday. There is also a highly creative series by Sarah Lahey, The Heartless Series. She uses science with humor and action/adventure to write about a hot future where humans have learned to adapt. I think you would like it. It’s not doomsday.

Nice! I’ve never heard of that Heartless series. I’ll look for that! Thanks for sharing.

Not at quite the same levels, but it’s been unseasonably hot in Iowa too, this last week. I’m definitely worried about it. Thanks for writing. I keep adding books you suggest to my list!

Thanks for this discussion of Cli-Fi, which is becoming all too real these days. My first thought is always for plants and wild animals, which often can't adapt nearly as fast as these changes in global weather. It is terrifying indeed!

Thanks for reading. I’m the same. Though it’s overwhelming to worry about all the creatures.

Charlotte, I'd be getting the heck out of Florida! So sorry you are experiencing Hell on Earth, and I mean that literally, except Hell, I hear, is a dry heat! The Coast of PNW is experiencing normal temps and precips for this time of year but I am bracing for what La Nina will bring either late Summer or next! Good luck to you!

It’s ok, we get Heaven in Winter. I’ll just be staying inside for now. I would love to go to the PNW though! Last time I planned a trip there, like 3 summers ago I believe, major forest fires in Oregon ended up preventing me from going.
